These situations where children interact with each other also allow the staff to evaluate children’s social skills. Social capital, both in the sense of constituted networks and the ability to build networks (as distinguished by Bevort and Lallement, 2006), therefore emerges as the primary concern of those in charge of constituting the ideal student group, while individual qualities are reduced to the elusive ‘character’ and associated social skills rather than academic potential.
